Come winter and India is ready to greet the much loved guests from abroad. Preparations have already begun in the Chilka Lake, Orissa to host the winged guests arriving in India this winter. Chilka Lake is the largest salt lagoon of Asia and stretches over 1,100 sq km. The lake is separated from the Bay of Bengal by a salt ridge and is considered one of the best spots in India to watch migratory birds in winter. The Lake is also designated as a wetland of international importance by the Ramsar convention.
This year, 18 temporary camps will be set up in the lagoon with constant patrolling by men on land and water to prevent incidents of poaching of these birds.
The birds are expected to start arriving from next week. Last year around 72 lakh birds belonging to 172 species visited the sanctuary during winter.
