India, The Seventh Largest Country In The World

India is South Asian nation that lies on the Indian Plate which is the northern part of the Indo-Australian Place. India is located in the Northern Hemisphere between 6°4 to 37°6’ N and 68°7' to 97°25’ E. The country occupies a total area of 3,287,263 square km and is thus the world’s seventh largest country by area. The territory of India stretches across 3,214 km from north to south, and 2,933 km from west to east. The country has a coastline length of 7,516.6 km and a land frontier of 15,200 km.




The Biggest State In India By Size

Rajasthan is the biggest state in India by size. It occupies an area of 342,239 square kilometres that accounts for 10.41% of the country’s total land area. The state is located to the west of the country and encompasses most of the Thar Desert area. The state shares its borders with Pakistan to the west and northwest. The Indian states of Punjab lies to its north. Haryana and Uttar Pradesh borders Rajasthan to the northeast. Gujarat lies to the southwest and Madhya Pradesh to the southeast.

The Smallest State In India By Size

Goa is India’s smallest state. Goa encompasses an area of 3,702 square km and is located in the Konkan coastal region of the country. The state accounts for 0.11% of India’s land area. It is bounded by Karnataka to the south and east, Maharashtra to the north, and the Arabian Sea to the west.

The Biggest Union Territory In India By Size

The Andaman and Nicobar Islands is the biggest union territory in India. It includes a group of islands located near the confluence of the Andaman Sea with the Bay of Bengal. The archipelago is located 150 km to the north of Indonesia’s Aceh. The Andaman Sea separates the archipelago from Myanmar and Thailand. The Andaman and Nicobar Islands occupies an area of about 8,249 square km that roughly accounts for 0.25% of the country’s land area.

The Smallest Union Territory In India By Size

Lakshadweep is the smallest union territory of India in terms of size. It is an archipelago located in the Laccadive Sea and is 200 to 440 km away from the south-western coast of mainland India. The Lakshadweep islands together occupy only about 32 square km that accounts for only 0.001% of India’s total land area. The lagoons of Lakshadweep encompass 4,200 square km and the territorial waters surrounding it covers an area of 400,000 square km.
