India hosts many wonders, both natural and human-made, and among them is the Kolukkumalai Tea Estate, the world’s highest tea estate. It is located in the Bodinayakanur Taluk in Tamil Nadu’s Theni district. The tea estate is located at an elevation of 7,130 feet above sea-level at the top of a precipitous ridge rising from Tamil Nadu’s plains. The Kolukkumalai Tea Estate is well known for its tea of excellent flavor and freshness. The high altitude influences the quality of the tea grown here. The panoramic views from the estate also make it a place worthy of a visit.

The Kolukkumalai Tea Estate is about 90 minutes’ drive away from Munnar, a noted hill station in Tamil Nadu. According to visitors, the life of people at the estate is very simple.  A tea factory stands at the middle of the estate. The factor that is over 70 years old was built by the British in the 1930’s. Even in this modern day, the factory uses traditional methods to produce tea, a big draw for visitors who earn the opportunity of learning a lot about the history of tea-making at this tea estate.

Tea is prepared here using a 7-step process. Tea leaves collected from the tea gardens at the estate are first withered, rolled, and sieved. They are then fermented and dried. Fiber extraction is then carried out following which the tea is graded on the basis of quality. Due to its uniqueness and high-grade tea production, the Kolukkumalai Tea Estate won the 2005 Southern Tea Competition. 

It is quite easy to visit the world’s highest tea estate. For this, one needs to first visit Munnar which is connected to most major cities in Tamil Nadu and Kerala by the government or private buses or cars and taxis.
