What Is The Capital Of Goa?

Where Is Goa?

Goa is a southwestern Indian state. It is located on the Konkan coast of the country and is separated from the Deccan Plateau to the east by the Western Ghats. Goa is bordered by Karnataka to the south and east and Maharashtra to the north. The Arabian Sea washes the shores of the state to the west. Goa is India’s smallest state by area and has the highest per capita GDP.

What Is The Capital Of Goa?

Panaji is the capital of Goa. It was formerly known as Panjim. It is the largest urban agglomeration in Goa and hosts a population of 114,759 individuals.

Where Is Panaji Located?

Panaji is located in the Ilhas de Goa sub-district of the North Goa district on the banks of the Mandovi River estuary. The town has an average elevation of 7 m. Panaji experiences a tropical monsoon climate.

When Did Panaji Become The Capital Of Goa?

For a long time, Panjim and the rest of Goa was a Portuguese territory. Only as recently as 1961, India invaded the Portuguese colony and captured it.

Prior to becoming a part of the Republic of India, Panaji served as the capital of Portuguese India. Initially, Velha Goa or Old Goa was the Portuguese capital. However, the city was abandoned in the 18th century due to the ravages of the plague. A nearby village, Panjim, was selected to serve as the new capital. In 1759, the Portuguese-appointed viceroy’s residence was shifted to Panjim. Old Goa continued to be the de jure capital of Goa. In 1843, Panjim or Panaji was officially declared to be the new capital of Portuguese India.

When Goa was made a state in 1987 in the Republic of India, Panjim or Panaji was declared to be its state capital. Today, Panaji also serves as the administrative headquarters of North Goa district.
