Location and Overview
The ceaseless and breathtakingly beautiful Deosai Plains mark the vast expanse of land where two of the greatest and most formidable mountain ranges of the world, the Karakoram, and the Himalayas, meet. This lush green fields blooming with the exquisite and unique flora and fauna was designated as a national park in 1993 to provide a sanctuary to the critically endangered Himalayan brown bear. Deosai National Park is located at a 2-hour drive from the city of Skardu which is connected by both air and land links to the capital city of Islamabad. The plateau is the highest in Pakistan and the second highest in the world.
History and Geography
The region was unexplored for a very long time because of its diverse wildlife which inhabited the plains. The advent of commercialization over the last 30 years has resulted in a greater accessibility, and the entire region is now both accessible and documented. The plains are snow laden from fall until early spring. The weather is unpredictable with occasional snowfalls reported in the summers. Even though the weather ranges from pleasantly cool to very cold, the park remains accessible throughout the year.
Habitat and Biodiversity
Trees and shrubs are hard to find in the Deosai Plains with the exception of its spring bloom and evergreen verdure. The park is a sanctuary for the Himalayan brown bear which is the primary focus of the management. Other threatened mammals that reside here include the snow leopard and also the vulnerable Himalaya musk deer. Hawks, eagles, falcons and vultures can also be found in the plains in large numbers. Herds of sheep and goats can also be spotted when nomads roam around the plains with their flocks.
Threats and Conservation
The primary threat in the region is to the critically endangered brown Himalayan bear, which was a prized achievement for poachers and hunters. The number of surviving animals fell to 12 in the 1990's when immediate steps were taken for conservation of this nearly extinct species. Since then the numbers have improved, and their population is regularly monitored and is the focus of research of the wildlife department. Himalayan Wildlife Foundation and the Northern Areas Forests, Parks and Wildlife Department have undertaken a research study to assure the survival of these nearly extinct species.
Tourism
The striking and picturesque splendor of the Deosai makes it a popular destination for adventure enthusiasts. While it is accessible from Skardu which is a more convenient link, it provides incredible views of breathtaking scenic beauty when coming from the side of Chillum valley. Mountains over 15,000 feet form the backdrop make it one of the world’s most amazing places to spend your vacations. In clear weather, one can witness the killer mountain Nanga Parbat in all its 26,660 feet might. Deosai Lake is another major attraction, and people come from far away to experience the serene atmosphere. Trekking and hiking are also major activities undertaken.
