Exploring The Beautiful Beaches Of Maharashtra, India


Ganpatipule Beach



Ganpatipule Beach is part of a small town of the same name located in the Ratnagiri district of Maharashtra’s Konkan coast. The town is famous for the 400-year-old Ganpati idol located in a temple at the base of a hill. It is about 375 km from Mumbai city and is frequented by pilgrims, beach lovers, and also peace seekers. The region also has rich flora including coconut palms and mangroves. The Maharashtra Tourism Development Corporation has a hotel near the beach and other resorts and spas have also sprung up in the region. Tourist attractions nearby include the beautiful beach village of Velneshwar, the historical city of Ratnagiri, Malgund (the birthplace of the famous Marathi poet Keshavasuta), the 17th-century Jaigad Fort, etc.

Guhagar Beach


The Guhagar Beach is located in the Ratnagiri District of Maharashtra.  The pristine beach and the regions coconuts, betel nuts, Alphonso mangoes, and coir products are all famous. The beach is located in the census city of the same name. The city is famous for the Vyadeshwar temple and the Durga Devi Temple.

Kelwa Beach


The Kelwa or Kelva Beach, a popular weekend getaway from Mumbai, is located about 80 km to the north of the city. The 8 km long beach is overcrowded with local tourists during the weekends. Three historical forts are located along the beach. The Shitla Devi Temple which is believed to have served as the temporary address of Lord Rama’s sons Luv and Kush, is also located here.

Tarkarli Beach

The Tarkarli beach is located at the confluence of the Arabian Sea and the Karli River. It is about 546 km from Mumbai and is about 8 km from Malvan. It has pristine waters and a long, narrow coastline makes it a popular place to visit. One can often view the sea bed up to a depth of 20 feet on a clear day. The wide Karli River, sailboats, tiny hamlets, and Shuru trees in and around the beach enhance the beauty of the landscape. It is also possible to sight dolphins near the coast. 

Tourist attractions at the Tarkarli Beach include several Hindu temples, scuba diving, snorkeling, white water rafting, boating, and other water sport activities, the Sangam of the Karli River and the Arabian Sea, the famed Sindhudurg Fort at Malvan, and other places of historical, natural, and religious significance. It is recommended that one does not venture deep into the sea as the currents here are strong and dangerous.

Aksa Beach


Aksa Beach is a popular beach vacation spot in the village of Aksa in Malad, Mumbai. A large number of private hotels and colleges line the beach. Although people are encouraged to enjoy the fresh breeze of the beach and walks on the beach, swimming is highly discouraged. The shifting sands of the beach and strong currents have often resulted in a number of casualties in the past. 

Alibaug Beach


The Alibaug Beach is located in Alibaug, a coastal town in Maharashtra’s Raigad District. The beach is very flat making it suitable for a refreshing long walk. Sand castle building is a popular tourist activity here. Since tide rolls in from all sides, tourists are warned to leave the beach on time else they might need to wade through the water on the way back. There are several famous temples, forts, beaches, and other attractions in and around Alibaug. One can also marvel at the grand view of the Alibaug Fort from the beach.

Gorai Beach


Gorai Beach is located near the Gorai village in the North-western part of the island of Salsette near Mumbai. The Gorai Beach is unfit for swimming due to unclean waters. The visitors to the beach can enjoy the calm, laid-back life of the village and the fresh sea breeze. Nearby attractions include the Essel World amusement park and the Global Vipassana Pagoda.

Juhu Beach


The most famous beach in Maharashtra, the Juhu Beached is based on the shores of the Arabian Sea and stretches for up to 6 km to Versova. The Juhu Beach is a visited by nearly all who visit Mumbai and is associated with the glamorous Bollywood Film Industry. Several movie-shoots are executed here while the homes of many popular Bollywood celebrities are also located in the Juhu area. The food court at the main entrance of the beach serves a variety of mouthwatering 'Mumbai style' street food like sevpuri, pani puri, bhelpuri, etc. Hawkers sell colorful products on the beach while acrobats and other performers display their talents for a small fee.
The Juhu Beach gets even more busy during the annual Ganesh Chaturthi celebrations when devotees and tourists arrive in masses to watch the Ganesh idol immersion at the beach. 

Manori Beach


Manori is a village on Dharavi Bhet that is famous for the Manori Beach and the Manori Creek. Manori is a popular weekend destination for those residing in Mumbai. The overall culture here is similar to that in Goa and thus tourists get to enjoy a mini-Goa experience. Numerous hotels and resorts are present here and the beach is always crowded with people. Several restaurants serve local and global delicacies near the beach. It is a popular place for cycling long distances. Several religious attractions are also present here.

Marve Beach


The Marve Beach is located in Mumbai’s Western Suburb of Malad. The beach is not suitable for swimming and other beach activities since it is narrow and has sinking sand and very swift currents.

Versova Beach


The Versova Beach is part of Versova, a posh neighborhood in north-western Mumbai. The land was part of a Portuguese colony up to 1739 when the Maratha Empire defeated the Portuguese to win back their native land. The historical Versova Fort is also located in the region. The Versova beach faces the Arabian Sea and a small fishing community is located nearby. Massive rocks at the boundaries of the beach protect the residential areas from the waves. Since the beach is submerged during high tide, no permanent structures exist on it.

Agardanda Beach

Agardanda Beach is an attractive beach located in the Murud Janjira Taluka of Maharashtra’s Raigad district. The beach provides a spectacular panoramic view of the Janjira fort. Coconut and betel nut trees line the coast of the beach.

Diveagar Beach


About 170 km south of Mumbai is the Divegar Beach located in the clean and sparsely populated Diveagar village. The beach is about 4 km long and undeveloped. The fishing settlement of Velas Agar is located at the north end of the beach where a small stream enters the ocean. A sanctuary for migratory seabirds exists at the south of the beach. Dolphins can be found at nearby Harihareshwar while sand-bubble crabs, sea turtles, and Casuarina trees can be seen on the Diveagar Beach.
