Indian States By Tiger Population

Which States In India Have The Highest Number Of Wild Tigers?

In 2010, when a tiger census was conducted across the world, some shocking results were revealed. Tiger numbers were falling across the world and India, the country with 70% of the world’s wild tiger population had only 1,706 tigers left in the wild (although this was an improvement from the figure of 1,411 wild tigers left in India in 2006). This created a wave of panic not only among the wildlife conservationists of the world but also the general wildlife-loving public of India. Soon, several measures, programs, and campaigns were arranged by the government of the India, people of India, and the conservation organizations like WWF to save the tigers living in the country. The efforts bore fruit and in 2014, and the tiger count of India nearly doubled to 2,226 tigers. This was a great news for the conservation community of the world and it exhibited that if a country’s people have the will to save its wildlife, it is quite possible to do so.

The tiger census also revealed the tiger population of the various states in India. As you can see from the data presented in the table below, Karnataka is the Indian state with the highest number of wild tigers in the age group of 1.5 years or more at 408 tigers. Uttarakhand follows next with a tiger population of 340 in the same age group. With 308 wild tigers, Madhya Pradesh is the third Indian state by wild tiger population.
