Before the renovation in 2011, the stadium had a higher seating capacity of 120,000. It was the largest football stadium in the world before the Rungrado May Day Stadium was opened in 1989.

Over the years, the Eden Gardens has hosted several Test, ODI, and T20I matches. The 66,349 seating stadium is India’s largest cricket stadium and the world’s second biggest cricket stadium after the Melbourne Cricket Ground in Australia. 3. Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium
Located in Guwahati, Assam, the Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Cricket Stadium, also known as the ACA Stadium, is a relatively new stadium that has been designed to host both domestic and international cricket matches. The world-class stadium has a seating capacity of 60,000 spectators. The first match to be hosted at the stadium was the East Zone Senior Women's Interstate One-day Championship played between Assam and Odisha.
4. Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium
The Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium is located in New Delhi, India. It is a multipurpose sports arena that hosts several sporting and large-scale entertainment events. The 60,000 capacity stadium is the 51st largest in the world. The headquarters of the Sports Authority of India is also located here.
5. Trivandrum International Stadium
Also known as the Greenfield Stadium, the Trivandrum International Stadium is a multi-purpose stadium in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala. It is the first DBOT model outdoor stadium in the country. The stadium has a seating capacity of 55,000 spectators and has facilities to host international cricket and football matches. It also has arrangements for indoor sports like basketball, badminton, table tennis. A gymnasium, spa, club house, tennis court, open convention, and trade exhibition center, and an Olympic size swimming pool are present here.
6. DY Patil Sports Stadium
The DY Patil Sports Stadium is a cricket and football stadium in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The stadium has been designed by one of the premier architects of India, Hafeez Contractor. It was inaugurated on March 4, 2008, and served as the home of the Mumbai Indians IPL team. It is the seventh largest stadium in the country with a capacity of 55,000. It is the largest sports venue in the city. The stadium also hosts 9 tennis hard courts, an Olympic sized swimming pool, and 4 indoor badminton courts.
7. EMS Corporation Stadium
It is a multi-purpose stadium located in Kozhikode, India. It is mainly used for football matches and seats 50,000 people. The stadium was built in 1977. Besides football matches, the stadium has also hosted several cultural events like the Malabar Mahotsavam.
8. Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium
Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium is a sports stadium in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. It is famous for hosting the first ever One Day International match played in India. However, when another stadium with the same name was built in Motera in 1982, this stadium lost its significance. It no longer is used for international cricket matches but is one of the home grounds of the Gujarat cricket team. The stadium is also used to host several programs by arranged by the Gujarat government.
9. Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium
Also nicknamed as the Naya Raipur International Cricket Stadium, the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Cricket Stadium, is located in Naya Raipur, Chhattisgarh. The stadium, inaugurated in 2008, seats 50,000 people. The first game was hosted in the stadium in 2010 when a practice match between the Canada national cricket team and the Chhattisgarh state team was held here. The stadium is named after an independence fighter from Chhattisgarh, Veer Narayan Singh.
10. Barabati Stadium
The Barabati Stadium, the 10th largest stadium in the world, is the home ground of Orissa’s cricket team. It also hosts several important football matches like the Santosh Trophy. The stadium serves as the current home of the Kings XI Punjab IPL team.
