The concept of the train was derived from the royal coaches that were part of passenger trains in the past and were used to carry the royals of India and the high officials of British India. The Palace of Wheels was first launched on January 26, 1982.
The train has 23 coaches and can accommodate 104 tourists. The coaches of the Palace on Wheels are named after various Rajput states of Rajasthan. Each coach is provided with four cabins equipped with Wi-Fi internet. The furniture, furnishings, and decor of the train reflect the royal culture of Rajasthan. The train also accommodates salons, spa, a bar cum lounge, and restaurants serving global delicacies. The Palace on Wheels have received international recognition several times in the past and have been part of documentaries on various channels like BBC, MTV, National Geographic, Discovery Channel, etc. It was also voted as the 4th most luxurious train by the Conde Nast Traveller magazine.
The Palace On Wheels has a 7 to 8 days itinerary. It makes a round trip journey from and to New Delhi and includes stops at Jaipur, Sawai Madhopur, Chittaurgarh, Udaipur, Jaisalmer, Jodhpur, Bharatpur, and Agra.

2. The Maharajas’ Express
The luxury tourist train, the Maharajas’ Express, has been voted as the "The World's Leading Luxury Train” five times consecutively (2012 to 2016) at The World Travel Awards. The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation owns and operates the train. The Maharajas’ Express service was started on March 2010.
The train is equipped with 23 carriages with 14 carriages used for accommodating the guests. The total passenger capacity of the train is 84. There are 43 individual cabins including 20 Deluxe Cabins, 18 Junior Suites, 4 Suites, and one Presidential Suite. Ultimate comfort and luxury are offered to the guests of the Maharajas’ Express. All modern amenities are available including live television, wifi internet, attached bathrooms, DVD player, electronic safes, bar, lounge, pneumatic suspension, etc. The train has two dining cars offering delectable dishes and a range of cuisines. The richly decorated restaurants are named as the Rang Mahal and the Mayur Mahal. The Rajah Club, a bar carriage, offers wines, spirits, beers, and more. The interior settings of the entire train exude luxury and remind one of India’s rich and royal past.
The train runs on 5 circuits and offers to take travelers to over 12 destinations across Central and North-West India. 3. The Royal Rajasthan on Wheels
The Royal Rajasthan on Wheels is a luxury tourist train modeled on the Palace on Wheels. The train is run by the Indian Railways through unique and mesmerizing natural and heritage sites across Rajasthan and also visit some other states of India. The train was launched as recently as January 2009.
The train is equipped with 14 luxury cabins fitted with modern amenities of all kinds like Wi-Fi internet, television, music system, individual temperature controls, etc. The interiors are decorated in style reflecting royalty and grandeur. The cabins of the train are named after the various famous palaces of Rajasthan. The two dining cars of the Royal Rajasthan on Wheels are named as the Sheesh Mahal (Mirror Palace) and the Swarn Mahal (Palace of Gold). The former features spectacular crystal pelmets and floor lamps while the latter features a gold and brass based decor. Indian, continental, and Chinese food are served at the restaurants of the train. The train also houses a souvenir coach selling ethnic handicraft products and jewelleries of India. A royal spa is also present in the train.
The Royal Rajasthan on Wheels embarks on a 7/8 day journey covering special attractions in the country. It starts at New Delhi's Safdarjung railway station and carries passengers on a mesmerizing tour of heritage cities of Rajasthan (Jodhpur, Udaipur, Chittaurgarh, and Jaipur), the Ranthambore National Park, Khajuraho, Varanasi, Agra, and then back to Delhi.

4. The Golden Chariot
The Golden Chariot is another one of India’s luxury trains which offer to take travelers cum luxury seekers on a memorable journey across southern India. The train is named after the famous chariot sculpture of Hampi’s Vittala Temple. It has 19 coaches colored purple and gold with a logo of a mythological creature that has an elephant’s head and a lion’s body. The Golden Chariot operates in the months of October to March which is the peak tourist season in the country. In 2013, it was awarded the title of "Asia's Leading Luxury Train" at the World Travel Awards. The Karnataka State Tourism Development Corporation operates the train while the hospitality services are managed by The Maple Group. The train was launched on January 23, 2008.
The Golden Chariot has 44 cabins named after some of famous ruling dynasties of India. Live television and internet facilities are available on the train. The train can accommodate about 88 passengers. Two multi-cuisine restaurants are present in the train named the Nala and Ruchi. The interiors of the entire train are tastefully decorated in a traditional Indian style. The train also comes with an on-site lounge bar, a conference car equipped with modern technology, a fully equipped gymnasium, and the Nirvana spa.

5. The Deccan Odyssey
The Deccan Odyssey, based on the model of the Palace on Wheels, is operated to boost tourism in Maharashtra. The luxury train was launched as a joint venture by the Indian Railways and the Maharashtra Government. The train can be regarded as a complete 5-start hotel on wheels that carries tourists to exotic and beautiful locales in the country. The train first started its journey on January 14, 2004.
The Deccan Odyssey has 10 coaches with 40 deluxe cabins. It also has 2 coaches with 4 presidential suites. Two restaurants, a conference coach, a spa, mini gym, parlor, and a well-stocked bar are all part of the star services provided to the passengers of the train.
Music players, internet service, live television, library, etc., are available for the entertainment of the guests on board the Deccan Odyssey. Fully air-conditioned coaches, running hot and cold water, and attached toilets are some of the features that ensure the comfort of the passengers of this train.

The Royal Orient is a luxury train running between the Indian states of Gujarat and Rajasthan. The train showcases the best of Indian heritage and culture and offers guests on board a perfect taste of Indian royalty. The train began its journey in 1994 to 1995.
