Beauty lies the beholders eye. The fact is so true and true beauty is thus hard to define. When it comes to enlisting the most beautiful women in India, it is a nearly impossible task as the country is home to many women who are most beautiful at heart (and that is what beauty should be about). However, if a list has to be created using logic, then the best we can do is name the Indian women who won the most prestigious awards for India in international beauty pageants and made the country proud. Reita Faria Powell
Reita Faria Powell is the first Asian woman to win the title of Miss World. She won the title in 1996. Reita was born to Goan parents in British ruled Bombay on August 23, 1943. Unlike most other models of her repute, Reita refused film and modeling offers after a year of her win and instead focussed on medical studies. After completing her M.B.B.S. degree from India, she went for further study to London’s King's College Hospital where she married David Powell, her mentor.
Zeenat Aman
Zeenat Aman was born on November 19, 1951, in Bombay and was the first South Asian to win the Miss Asia Pacific title in 1970. She was also credited with changing the look of leading actresses in Hindi cinema to a more modern one. Her film career began in 1971 with a small role in the film Hulchul. She became popular after her role as Dev Anand’s sister in the film Hare Rama Hare Krishna. Here, she won over hearts with her performance in the song Dum Maro Dum. After this, Zeenat Aman went on to star in many more Hindi films and quickly went up the ladder of success.
Sushmita Sen
Sushmita Sen was born on November 19, 1975, to a Bengali family in Hyderabad. Her father is a former Wing Commander of the Indian Air Force and her mother is a jewelry designer. She rose to fame by winning the 1994 Miss Universe pageant and made India proud as the first Indian to win this crown. After her win, she pursued a career in Bollywood and was largely successful. Her first movie was Dastak. She has also won several awards as an actress.
Aishwarya Rai
Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is an extremely popular celebrity in India with a huge fan base in the country and abroad. She first came to the limelight as the winner of the 1994 Miss World pageant. She made her debut in the Indian film industry by acting in the Tamil film Iruvar directed by Mani Ratnam. Since then, there was no looking back and her acting career boomed and she became one of the leading ladies in the Bollywood film industry. She won several awards and accolades and was also honored with the Padma Shri award by the Government of India. In 2007, Rai married Abhishek Bachchan, an actor and the son of Amitabh Bachchan. Rai also acts as the Goodwill Ambassador for the UNAIDS. She was also the first Indian actress to be a jury at the Cannes Film Festival.
Diana Hayden
Diana Hayden, an Indian model, and actress was born on May 1, 1973, in Hyderabad, Telangana to an Anglo-Indian Christian family. She won the Miss World contest in 1997 where she represented India. She has starred in the 'Ab Bass’ Bollywood movie and also was a participant in the Bigg Boss, a reality show in India.
Yukta Mookhey
Yukta Mookhey, the winner of the 1999 Miss World beauty pageant held in London, was born on October 7, 1977, in Bangalore to a doctor father and a mother who owned a grooming consulting firm. She made her first debut in the Indian film industry in a Tamil movie where she performed an item number. Her first film as a leading lady was the 2002 Pyaasa with Aftab Shivdasani playing the male lead. The film flopped badly at the box office. She married a New York-based businessman, Prince Tuli in 2008 and had a son together. She got divorced from her husband in 2014. Mookhey is known for her social and charitable work for the poor and has also permitted the donation of her eyes after death.
Lara Dutta
Lara Dutta Bhupathi was born on April 16, 1978, in Ghaziabad, UP, to a Punjabi father (who is a Wing Commander), and an Anglo-Indian mother. She went on to win the Miss Universe 2000 contest where she represented India. In 2003, she debuted in a Bollywood romantic drama film named Andaaz. The film was a big hit and that led to her winning the Filmfare Best Female Debut Award. After that, Dutta appeared in several other top-grossing films. In 2011, Lara Dutta married a famous Indian tennis player Mahesh Bhupathi and their daughter was born in January 2012.
Priyanka Chopra
Priyanka Chopra is well-known Indian celebrity, actress, philanthropist, singer, and film producer. She was born on July 18, 1982, in Jamshedpur, Bihar to parents who were both physicians in the Indian Army. Priyanka rose to fame by winning the Miss World crown in 2000. Soon, film offers from Bollywood poured in and she accepted the offers to join the industry. Many of her films in which she played a leading role were box-office hits. She won the National Film Award for Best Actress and several other national and international awards for her role as an actress. Priyanka even won the Padma Shri, India’s fourth highest civilian award in 2016. Her fame, personality, and social work have made her one of the 100 most influential people in the world, as per the Time magazine. Chopra has also worked for the UNICEF for 10 years and in 2010 and 2016, she was appointed as the UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador for Child Rights. Chopra has founded the Purple Pebble Pictures production company and also released three singles as a recording artist.
Dia Mirza
She is an Indian actor, model, and producer who won the Miss Asia Pacific 2000 competition in 2000. Following her win, Dia played a lead role in several successful Bollywood films and is also highly regarded for her social work. Presently, she and her husband, Sahil Sangha, own a production house. Dia’s father was German and her mother is an Indian Bengali lady. After her parents’ divorce, her mother remarried and she was given the surname of her step-father, Ahmed Mirza. During her college years, Dia worked as a marketing executive for a media firm and also modeled for television commercials. In 2000, she achieved big after winning the Miss Asia Pacific 2000 title and was soon offered roles in Bollywood movies. Her first debut was in the film Rehnaa Hai Terre Dil Mein. Dia is well-known for her charitable work and love for the environment and animals. She has actively participated in awareness campaigns for PETA, CRY, Cancer Patients Aid Association, and other similar organizations.
Nicole Faria
Nicole Estelle Faria is an Indian actor and supermodel who won the title of Miss Earth 2010, thus becoming India’s first woman to win this title. Nicole was born on February 9, 1990, and entered the fashion world at the age of 15 years. Faria completed her schooling in Sophia High School, Bangalore, and BA from the city’s Mount Carmel College. In 2010, she participated in the Pantaloons Femina Miss India contest and won the title of Femina Miss India Earth, 2010. Next, she participated in the Miss Earth 2010 contest held in Vietnam and emerged as the winner after defeating 85 other finalists. Since then, she has participated in several events, shows, and traveled the world as a global brand ambassador.
