The financial capital of India, Mumbai hosts some of the country’s tallest skyscrapers. It also ranks 11th in the world in terms of the number of skyscrapers in a city. The Mumbai Metropolitan Region has over 3000 high-rise buildings. Most of these buildings are residential since the cost of land in Mumbai is skyrocketing. The city is also currently undergoing a construction boom and has the highest number of under-construction supertalls and skyscrapers in the world. The history of high-rises in Mumbai dates back to the 1970’s when the Matru Mandir and Usha Kiran skyscrapers were first built. These buildings were 76 m tall and had 25 floors, each. For nearly two decades following the construction of these buildings, the work on skyscrapers slowed down in the city but once more surged since the mid-1990s.
The Imperial
The tallest building in Tardeo, South Mumbai is The Imperial. It is a twin tower that is meant for residential purpose. The building was completed and inaugurated in 2010. The building has been designed by the architect Hafeez Contractor. The Imperial stands on former slum area and is the first time where the current re-development model of exchange of land and rehabilitation of slum dwellers in exchange for property development rights was put into practice.
