India’s tallest peak and the world’s third highest one, Mount Kanchenjunga, is located on the border between Nepal and the Indian state of Sikkim. The 28,169 ft tall mountain is thus the highest peak in the Northeast of India and in Sikkim. The mountain has a total of five peaks with two on the border area and three entirely in Nepal. On May 25, 1955, the first people to climb the mountain were Joe Brown and George Band. However, these climbers stopped just short of the summit of the mountain to pay respect to the local belief that the mountain should remain unconquered. The same tradition is followed even today.
2. Kangto, Arunachal Pradesh
The highest mountain in Arunachal Pradesh is the Kangto which is 23,163 ft high. The mountain is part of the Eastern Himalayas mountain range and is located on the border between the northeast Indian state of Arunachal Pradesh and China’s Tibet Autonomous Region. There is a great dispute between the two countries regarding the claim to the area in and around the mountain.
3. Saramati Peak, Nagaland
Part of the Naga Hills in Nagaland, India, Mount Saramati is the highest point in this Indian state. The peak is located on the border between Burma’s Sagaing Region and in the Kiphire district of Nagaland of India. The mountain has an elevation of 12,602 above sea-level.
4. Mount Iso, Manipur
Located in the Senapati District of Manipur, Mount Iso is the highest point in this Indian state. The mountain has an elevation of 9,823 ft.
5. Phawngpui, Mizoram
The highest mountain in Mizoram, the Phawngpui 7,077 ft tall. The peak is part of the Lushai Hills and is located in the Lawngtlai District near the state’s border with Myanmar. The Phawngpui is no ordinary peak for the locals of the area. It is the center of the region’s folk religion and many folklore tales are associated with this mountain. It is believed to be the abode of deities and spirits. The area is currently protected within the limits of the Phawngpui National Park and can be visited between November and April each year. Birdlife is very rich here and attracts many birdwatchers to the area. Occasional sightings of the clouded leopard have been recorded too.
6. Shillong Peak, Meghalaya
The 6,447 ft tall Shillong Peak is the highest point in Meghalaya. The peak belongs to the Khasi Hills range of the state. The mountain offers a stunning panoramic view of the Shillong city from the summit. According to local beliefs, the hills in the area are the abode of local deities who protect the city against evils.

Assam’s highest point has not yet been named. It is a 6,430 ft tall hill located in the state’s Dima Hasao District.

Tripura’s highest elevation is the 3,050 ft tall Betlingchhip. It is a part of the region’s Jampui Hills. The slopes of the peak are covered in rich vegetation and offer a nice view of the surroundings from the top.
