Where Is The Floating Post Office In India?

India has the highest number of post offices in the world. That is a known fact. However, did you know that the country is also home to a floating post office? Intrigued?
Here are some of the facts:

Where Is The Floating Post Office In India?

The floating post office of India is located in the Dal Lake in the Srinagar city of India’s northernmost state, Jammu and Kashmir. Srinagar’s Dal Lake is famous for its ethereal beauty. It is surrounded by the lofty Himalayan mountains. The pleasant weather and the serene ambiance of the lake attract many tourists to take a boat ride on the lake. Traditional, richly-carved wooden houseboats plying on the Dal lake are also popular accommodation options for those visiting Srinagar.

When Was The Floating Post Office In India Established?

The floating post office was opened by the state’s Chief Minister Omar Abdullah in August 2011. The aim of setting up the post office was to promote tourism to Jammu and Kashmir. It also acted as a befitting tribute to a lake that has served as one of the symbols of Kashmir for centuries and is often referred to as the ‘crown of Kashmir’.

Features Of India’s Only Floating Post Office

The post office is located on a massive houseboat on the lake. It also has a philately museum and a shop selling local souvenirs, postage stamps, greeting cards, stationery items, etc. Tourists can also call or email their friends and family in India and abroad at this post office.

The letters here are delivered to all corners of the globe. The letters bear a special design that features picturesque images of the spectacular landscapes of the Dal Lake and other places of Jammu and Kashmir.
