Manipur Tour Part 6: The Loktak Lake, A True Marvel Of Manipur

If you are visiting Manipur, then you must visit its most famous natural destination, the beautiful Loktak Lake. This lake is like no other in the world due to its floating islands called phumdis. These islands give the lake a spectacular appearance. When viewed aerially, the Loktak Lake appears “spotted” with green ring-shaped islands floating on the vast blue lake.

Loktak Lake is Northeast India’s biggest lake. It is located in the Imphal Valley and is surrounded by hills and fishing villages. It is only about an hour and a half’s distance from Manipur’s capital city of Imphal. It is from Imphal that we began our tour to the Loktak Lake this February.

We were staying at Hotel Imphal in Imphal and hired a car and driver from the hotel to take us to the lake and other nearby tourist spots. Our journey took us to the Sendra Park and Resort, a sprawling resort located on the Sendra Hill that juts into the Loktak Lake so that you can see the mesmerizing lake on both sides of the resort. The blue waters of the lake stretched out as far as our eyes could see. The flowing waters were interrupted by small to giant-sized phumdis that were scattered throughout the lake. The combination of blue and green was very soothing to the eyes. Outlines of hills could be seen in the distance marking the boundaries of the lake.

Our driver took us to the Sangai Cafe of the resort where we ordered a cup of coffee. As we sat in their outdoor restaurant, we marveled at the beauty of the lake. There was also a lot of greenery inside and around the resort. Trees dotted the hill on which the resort was located. Many colorful birds also came to our view.

As we sipped our coffee, we had made up our minds. We must stay at the resort the next time we visit Manipur. The surroundings were so naturally bountiful that a stay here would definitely calm our tired nerves.

For those who want to go boating in the lake, the facility is also available. We could not do so as we had other destinations to visit.
If you wish to know more about the lake and what its phumdis as well know about one of its best-kept secrets, then visit here:
