The Academy Awards, also popularly known as the Oscars are considered to be one of the most prestigious awards for artistic and technical merit in films. Only a few Indians have received this award so far and the list is mentioned below:
Satyajit Ray
The legendary Indian filmmaker, author, lyricist, screenwriter, music composer, and graphic artist, Satyajit Ray was the first citizen from India to get an Oscar Award. Born to a prominent Bengali family in Kolkata (then Calcutta), Ray started his career as a commercial artist and then transitioned into independent filmmaking. 36 feature films, shorts, and documentaries were directed by him. He was considered a genius with multiple talents. He created Feluda, a hugely popular fictional detective character. In 1992, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences awarded him an honorary Oscar. Ray also won numerous other national and international awards of the highest order.

Bhanu Athaiya
Born in 1929 as Bhanumati Annasaheb Rajopadhye, she is an Indian costume designer who has worked in more than 100 films. Athaiya has worked with top national directors like Yash Chopra, Raj Kapoor, and Guru Dutt, as well as famous international directors Richard Attenborough and Conrad Rooks. In the initial years of her career, she was a freelance fashion illustrator for female magazines. Later, she started designing dresses. C.I.D. (1956) directed by Guru Dutt was the first film where Athaiya designed the costumes. Now, her success knew no end. In her 50-year career span, she received numerous awards including the prestigious Academy Award for Best Costume Design in 1982 for her work in the film Gandhi (1982). In 2012, reports mentioned that she wanted to return her Academy Award to The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences as she believed that after her demise, the Award could be stolen. The same was returned to The Academy in December 2012.

Resul Pookutty
A film sound editor, sound designer, and audio mixer from India, Resul Pookutty is also one of the few Indians to have won the Academy Awards. Born in 1971, Pookutty was born in a poor family where his father was a private bus ticket checker. During his school days, he had to study in the light of a kerosene lamp as his village had no electricity. Despite the hardships, he completed his bachelors in Physics and then studied both Bachelor of Laws as per his father’s wish and also graduated from Pune-based Film and Television Institute of India. After moving into Mumbai, Pookutty became a technician in Bollywood. In 1997, he made his debut in sound design in the film Private Detective: Two Plus Two Plus One. His work in the film Black directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali earned him great fame. In the subsequent years, he worked in many noted films and earned several prestigious national and international awards. He received Academy Award for Best Sound Mixing in 2009 for his work in Slumdog Millionaire. He received the award along with two others Richard Pryke and Ian Tapp.

A. R. Rahman
Born A. S. Dileep Kumar and later renamed Allahrakka Rahman or A. R. Rahman, he is an exceptionally talented Indian music director, musician, singer, composer, and music producer. His works in Indian classical music, world music, electronic music, and other genres of music and use of traditional orchestral arrangements have earned him worldwide fame. Rahman got his first big break in the 1990 Tamil film Roja. Since then, Rahman became a household name in India. In 2009, his name was included in the Time 100 list of the world's most influential people. In 2009, A. R. Rahman won the Oscar in the Best Original Score category for his work in the film Slumdog Millionaire. Rahman is also the only Indian to win two Oscar Awards. He shared the Academy Award for the Best Original Song with Gulzar in 2009 for his work in the same film.
Gulzar
Sampooran Singh Kalra, known by his pen name Gulzar, is an Indian poet, lyricist, and film director. Born in 1934, Gulzar and his family moved from Pakistan to India following the Partition of India. In the initial years of his career, Gulzar worked as a lyricist for the music director, legendary S.D. Burman. His first work was in the 1963 film Bandini. Later, he worked with many other notable films of Bollywood. He received some of the highest awards in India and abroad including the Academy Awards in 2009 for his role as a lyricist in the film Slumdog Millionaire.
