The Design Of The Building Of The Supreme Court Of India

The foundation stone of the present-day Supreme Court building was laid on October 29, 1954, by India’s first President, Dr. Rajendra Prasad. The building’s shape symbolizes the scales of justice. The center beam of the building houses the Central Wing of the court which includes the court of the Chief Justice and two court halls on either side. The Right Wing and the Left Wing host the other courts, offices, library, etc., required for the functioning of the court.

A Mother and Child black bronze sculpture built by Chintamoni Kar was added in the building premises on February 20, 1980. It represents Mother India holding a child (the Republic of India) holding an open book (representing the country upholding the laws of the land). A balance beam is exhibited on the book to represent that justice is equal for all.
