Which Is The Highest Airport In India?

Where Is The Airport Located?

The Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport located in the Indian state of Jammu and Kashmir is the highest airport in the country. It is located in Leh at an elevation of 10,682 ft. The airport is the world’s 22nd highest commercial airport.

Origin Of The Name Of The Airport

The airport bears the name of the founder of the Spituk Monastery, the 19th Kushok Bakula Rinpoche. He was a great monk and statesman. The monastery is located close to the airport.

Operations At The Highest Airport In India

All flights operate only in the morning at the airport. The high terrain of the region surrounding the airport offers great challenges to the landing of aircraft at the airport. High-security measures are adopted here to prevent any mishaps. The airport is also one of the most scenic airports in the world. It is surrounded by the lofty peaks of the snow-clad Himalayas.

Redesigning Of India’s Highest Airport

There is good news to those seeking a visit to the spectacular Leh. The  Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport will soon open its doors to the civilian tourists. For the same purpose, the airport is being redesigned by architects and features like sculptures of Buddhist monks, colorful prayer wheels, and flags, etc., are being added to enhance the beauty of the airport. The Airports Authority of India has initiated this project.
