The Five Best Eco-friendly Stays In India For Nature Lovers

In the present day, a growing concern about the fast-degrading environment has fostered the growth of the ecotourism sector worldwide. However, the definition of ecotourism or related terms like sustainable tourism, green tourism, etc., is shrouded in ambiguity. They are widely used and often misused. Here, let us understand these terms better through examples of five eco-friendly properties in India that can serve as models for the ecotourism sector.

The Need For Ecotourism

It is said that if any industry can be called friendly” to the environment, tourism comes the closest. There are two primary reasons backing this thought. First, tourism introduces millions to the wonders of nature. By bringing people closer to the natural world, it allows them to fall in love with it. This love gives birth to the passion and will to protect nature. Today, many wildlife conservationists, researchers, photographers, and other conservation professionals speak of how their childhood visits to forests, seas, and mountains nurtured their purpose in life.

The second important implication of tourism is that it provides local communities with alternative livelihood sources. Local communities refer to the populations living within or along the borders of protected areas and other wildlife-rich habitats. They are often marginalised sections of society that depend heavily on the forest for their daily needs. Such communities are important conservation stakeholders. Without their support, the conservation of wildlife is next to impossible. Employment in the wildlife tourism industry grants them the income source that decreases their reliance on the forest, like collecting firewood, minor forest produce, etc. It also motivates them to safeguard the wild habitats that are their livelihood source.

However, while tourism has these major benefits, it can also be highly invasive and damaging to natural ecosystems if allowed to flourish unregulated. Sprawling resorts and lodges coming up in wildlife habitats might restrict the movement of wildlife and disturb their natural ways of life. Waste generated from tourism can degrade the environmental quality by polluting water, air, and soil. Wildlife living in such environments can suffer from diseases caused due to the polluted environment. Overcrowding in wildlife areas can disturb normal wildlife behaviour, adversely affecting the long-term survival of the affected species. The solution, therefore, lies in practising ecotourism as exemplified by the following five:

Vanghat Lodge, Uttarakhand

Vanghat, one of the remotest accommodations in northern India, is an eco-lodge based on the banks of the Ramganga River in the Corbett Tiger Reserve. To travel to this property, visitors must embark on a 1.8 km trek through the mountainous terrain and cross the river on a raft. Once there, it feels like staying in the wilderness. Except for the stone and mud constructions for living and dining, the rest of the property appears to be a continuation of the forest.

Water is served in glass bottles and tumblers instead of plastic. Soft lighting is used to avoid light pollution in the pristine environment. Vanghat also offers eco-friendly activities to its guests, like swimming in the Ramganga River, trekking, birdwatching, stargazing, and more. There are books related to nature and wildlife in the lodge for those who want to enjoy reading in the tranquil location. The lodge also keeps binoculars to allow visitors to enjoy wildlife-watching activities.

Guests are also directed not to use loud music in the lodge to keep the sanctity of the environment intact. Vanghat also employs staff from the local communities, providing them with a livelihood source. It also hosts wilderness training programs at regular intervals where experts in the conservation and wildlife research field share their knowledge with the participants.

Pangolakha Wilderness Homestay,  Sikkim

Nestled in a tiny mountain village bordering the Pangolakha Wildlife Sanctuary of Sikkim, this homestay is a good definition of an eco-friendly property. The homestay rooms are based on the first floor of the building, while the lower floor serves as a hostel for children from the local community. Proceeds from the homestay support the education of these children. The room interiors of the homestay are simple, but the view of the surrounding forest-laden mountains is gorgeous.

Warm food prepared from locally sourced ingredients and cooked by local staff is served to the guests. All around the property is native vegetation that supports a rich diversity of wildlife. The homestay is jointly run by a local Buddhist monk named Lama Ji and Sushil Chikane, the Director of Journeys Explore from Pune.

With a team skilled in wildlife photography, Sushil draws visitors from across India to this remote homestay for wildlife photography tours, thus promoting the rich natural heritage of Sikkim. The effort allows the locals to take pride in their local biodiversity. Sushil also trains the local community members to become nature guides in Pangolakha and equips them with wildlife guidebooks, binoculars, and cameras. Guests are offered the opportunity to participate in this unique initiative by contributing to this cause.

Denwa Backwater Escape, Madhya Pradesh

This sprawling property near the Satpura Tiger Reserve, run by Pugdundee Safaris, offers luxury in an eco-friendly way. The contemporary safari-style cottages offer serene views of the Denwa River's backwaters, the surrounding wild grasslands, and the rolling hills of Pachmarhi.

The design uses locally sourced and recyclable materials like stones, recycled furniture, etc. Metal water bottles are gifted to visitors to discourage the use of plastics. The resort houses some of the best naturalists who introduce the guests to the great wonders of the wildlife world in Satpura. Nature walks with them are extremely rewarding.

Wildlife films and presentations are showcased to guests every evening before dinner. Several water bodies are inside the property while natural vegetation grows all around, continuing with the wilderness outside. Thus, the property serves as a habitat for many mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles, etc. There is also the opportunity to take a boat ride in the river outside the property and watch many species of migratory birds visiting the area in winter.

Svanir Wilderness Ecostay, Odisha

This boutique homestay on the outskirts of Bhubaneshwar comes as quite a surprise. It is the home of the Mukherjee family, who welcome guests with a lot of warmth and care. The tribal-themed cottages here are made from local materials, are decorated very tastefully, and feature various art and craft forms of Odisha. The beautiful garden of the property is full of native trees that attract many species of birds, butterflies, and other animals. Freshly plucked fruits and vegetables from the property are used to cook the hearty meals by the homeowner, Indrani, herself, with the help of women from local communities.

The hosts employ environment-friendly methods like rainwater harvesting technology to replenish and recharge the groundwater, greywater harvesting by channelling it to the garden, and drip irrigation for watering the garden. The traditional "bucket and mug" system of bathing is used instead of bath showers to save water. The hosts also curate personalised itineraries per the guests' requirements, including a host of natural and cultural destinations promoting Odisha's rich and diverse heritage.

Wildernest Nature Resort Goa, Goa

In the densely forested mountains of the Chorla Ghats of the Western Ghats biodiversity hotspot, Wildernest Nature Resrot is a hidden gem. This eco-friendly property introduces its guests to the thrills of living in the forest and exploring the region's rich wildlife. The biggest attraction is a funicular ride of around five minutes to the property, providing jaw-dropping panoramic views of the mountains and waterfalls.

The property's cottages also come with stunning views of mountains, valleys, waterfalls, and forests. In place of landscaped gardens, native tropical forests envelop the property, where you can easily spot a host of wildlife, including beautiful birds and butterflies. Herbal ingredients are provided instead of hard chemicals for hair and body care.

Daily treks and trails are offered to visitors, such as the highest point trek, waterfall trek, and night trail, where well-trained naturalists show and share interesting trivia about the local plants and animals. The property uses eco-friendly lighting to ensure the wildlife in the area does not feel disturbed. Dance and music shows promoting local culture are also arranged in the evenings.

Every tourism initiative should aim to achieve its eco-friendly goal by having the maximum positive impact while ensuring the minimum carbon footprint. However, the responsibility also lies with the travellers who must learn to choose wisely and demand eco-friendly approaches to tourism to ensure that ecotourism thrives in the coming times.

Dadhikar Fort: A Nature Resort And Fort At Alwar, Rajasthan, India

Perfect For Nature Lovers: If you are a nature lover, you would find this place a heavenly getaway. The Dadhikar Fort is located on the slopes of the Aravalli Hills and is surrounded by a hilly landscape amidst a village environment about 10 km away from Alwar city. Thus, the place is green and naturally beautiful.

A Birdwatcher's Delight: A great number of bird species call the Dadhikar Fort their home. The presence of a large number of trees in and around the fort provide a good habitat for the birds. Thus, if you are a birdwatcher, you simply need to stand on the balcony of your room with a binocular and a camera in hand and happily spend hours bird watching.

Destressing Effect: The Dadhikar Fort is great for de-stressing since it is away from the hustle and bustle of city life, surrounded by greenery, offers fresh and clean air, and relaxing activities. Thus, you can definitely look forward to de-stressing yourself here.

Memorable Dining Experience: The dining out under the stars experience is a top draw at the Dadhikar Fort. The fort has quite a few venues for dining and they keep rotating the dining area. Thus, you get to enjoy your breakfast, lunch, and dinner at different settings during your stay. The food is offered in the form of buffet which is purely vegetarian. The food is tasty and served in style.

Courteous Staff: The always-smiling staff at the Dadhikar Fort will make you feel warm and welcome at the resort. We never felt for once that they were smiling because they simply had to but it felt like they really believed in the Indian concept that guests are like Gods and must be treated so.

Unique Rooms: The Dadhikar Fort currently has 17 unique rooms playing hide-and-seek among the brick walls and columns comprising the fort. The rooms range from grand suites to rustic looking rooms with hexagonal beds. The shape, size, and design of each room is very unique and the price range also varies widely.

Keeps Photographer's Busy: If you love photography, keep clicking away and you would still find arches, columns, brick walls, ethnic artefacts, blooming flowers, and the surrounding scenery at the Dadhikar Fort left to be photographed.

Great Sightseeing Opportunities: The Dadhikar Fort is located near a number of attractions including the Siliserh Lake, Sariska Tiger Reserve, Bhangarh Fort, Bala Qila, Alwar City Palace, and more.

A Bit Expensive But A Magical Experience: The stay at Dadhikar Fort might appear a bit expensive for budget travelers but if you spend a night here, you are sure to carry back home oodles of sweet and magical memories with you.

Caution: The fort involves a lot of climbing up and down so elderly people and those with walking issues need to be aware of that. Also, the route to the fort is slightly confusing so one must take proper directions from hotel staff. Google map is also of great help. There are two routes to the fort. On the first day, we were misguided by the locals and took the much longer route from Alwar City. However, the hotel staff informed us of the shorter and better route the next day. Also, phone towers and internet connection are unpredictable here and no wi-fi connections are offered. However, we did manage to have a near proper Vodafone signal at the fort but our Vodafone internet hardly worked.

Enjoy your stay at the Dadhikar Fort. You will not be disappointed.

Visit the website of the Dadhikar Fort for further details and booking information: http://www.dadhikarhotels.com

Camping at Algonquin With Overhang Adventures

Are you visiting the bustling metropolis of Toronto in summer? Are you someone who has never camped before?

If the answer to both these questions is yes, then get ready to embark on an amazing journey into the heart of Canadian wilderness at the Algonquin Provincial Park, with the assistance of some cool guides from Overhang Adventures who will teach you all you need to know about camping.

Last summer,  my husband and me, two people who had no prior camping experience signed up for a package tour "Intro to Algonquin" by Overhang Adventures (in association with Parkbus), where we were to attend a 3-day front country camping trip at Algonquin with our tour guides, Jill and Kris.

Here, we are discussing why this trip was simply amazing and why it is a must attend for all who are new to camping:

Smooth Journey to The Park: The Algonquin Provincial Park is located around 3 hours away from Toronto. The round trip from Toronto to Algonquin was included in our trip package and we were picked up by Parkbus at one of the scheduled stops of the bus in downtown Toronto early in the morning. The bus journey was nice and comfortable and definitely very scenic, especially as the fall colours were arriving in mid-September.

Excellent Introduction to Multiculturalism: As we arrived at our stop in Algonquin Park, we were greeted by our guides for the trip who introduced us to each other and to the other campers in the team. There were visitors attending from 11 countries in the world and we were to stay together as a team in the Algonquin wilderness for the next two nights! Unity in diversity was definitely something we learnt in this trip!

Fun and Learning: We learnt a lot of activities in this trip: setting up our tents, learning the various types of knots, playing outdoor games, splitting wood pieces with an axe in the safest possible way, etc. Our guides gave us hands-on experience in all these activities and were very patient throughout our learning process. Each and every one of us received equal attention from the guides who never failed to help us out. The whole evening was spent in a fun and fruitful manner.

Wholesome food: Though definitely we cannot expect fine cuisines on a camping trip and food was primarily vegetarian in nature (as that's the safest way to treat a multicultural crowd), it was enough to keep us full and also tasted quite good after our long hikes and canoeing activities throughout our tour. It is also wise to take some dry food with you as you might feel hungry in the after hours and need to satisfy your pangs of hunger at such times. We also often helped in the cooking procedures which was again a lot of fun.

Beautiful Nature: We were surrounded by natural bounties all around us, we sighted a few birds and also had some interesting non-human visitors to our campsite: a sly little fox and a cute and daring raccoon. A vast, blue lake stretched out for a long distance just a few steps away from our campsite where we would often spend time relaxing.

Bathroom facilities: The Whitefish Lake campground is also the only campground in Algonquin with basic toilet facilities, without bathing facilities. So, for all those of you who are a bit jumpy at the thought of having to do "it" in the open, might rest assured that is not the problem here.

Loads of activities: You will be trained to canoe and no worries, me being a non-swimmer and a water-fearing person, was able to canoe on the Whitefish Lake with my husband for nearly an hour and a half, thanks to the helpful guides who stayed with us on their canoe, guiding us through the lake. We also enjoyed long hikes encompassing wildlife viewing and scenic viewpoint stopovers. Of course, the bonfires at night complete with the ghost stories told by our fellow campers was also extremely exciting.

Excellent Memories: On this camping trip, as a first-time camper I learned a lot and was at the end of the trip really thankful to Overhang Adventures for arranging such a trip where you can experience what it is to be a camper while staying within the easy reach of safety and comfort, a preparation for the next level-up where you can actually go backcountry camping. The tour is suitable for all and you are can opt out of any activities you deem might be difficult for you. You also learn to interact with people from across the world, live with them as a team and learn new things together. In the presence of guides, your safety is ensured as long as you follow the rules properly.

So, the next time you are visiting Toronto in summer,  be sure to enjoy your Algonquin trip with Overhang Adventures.

Upper Mathanguri and Lower Mathanguri Forest Rest House, Manas National Park

I have lived in a number of wildlife resorts, lodges, rest houses and camps in India and many international wildlife destinations. However, though each experience has been thrilling and unique, my wildest stay till date would be the stay at Lower Mathanguri Lodge at Manas National Park, Assam, India.

Here are reasons why I would recommend this wild stay to all wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers:

1. Wow, what a location!

View of Manas River from Upper Mathanguri

Situated on the banks of the Manas River in the midst of the dense Manas forest, the Mathanguri forest lodge is completely disconnected from the rest of the world. There are two guest houses, the Upper and Lower, with the former located on a small hillock, overlooking the Manas River while the latter located a short distance away, on the banks of the Manas River. Being a government owned lodge, Mathanguri enjoys the privilege of being located on the best possible spot in the Manas National Park, right in the core area of the forest. During the day, you can enjoy the stunning views of the beautiful Manas river flowing a few feet away from your lodge, in the backdrop of the Himalayan foothills of Bhutan. The lodge's location in the core area also highly increases the chances of viewing wildlife from within the confines of your lodge's balcony. During our stay, we were able to spot a variety of beautiful birds. Though there were reports of tiger sightings near the lodge a few days ago, we were not lucky enough to catch a glimpse of this striped beauty during our trip.

2. Complete Isolation

Often, we think of leaving behind our phones and laptops while packing for a vacation to get rid of office calls and spend some quality time with our close ones in the heart of nature. Well, in Mathanguri, you do not need to make any arrangements of this kind as the location ensures you remain completely cut off from the rest of the world. Try as many connections as you may, nowhere in Mathanguri will your cell phone detect any tower. There are also no land phones in the lodge. Only one spot, which requires a considerable amount of climbing, manages to detect some cell phone tower However, try climbing to this spot after dark and there are high chances of you becoming tiger dinner! Electricity lines are also absent in Mathanguri except for the generator run electricity that is available from 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm in the evening. After dark, walking in the area is strictly forbidden and even though we had to travel a short distance from the canteen at Upper Mathanguri to our rooms in Lower Mathanguri, we had to take a ride on the gypsy. Once in, after dinner, light from a kerosene lamp was our only light source as darkness  had enveloped the entire forest around us.

3. Excellent facilities

The Lower Mathanguri Lodge

As long as you are not expecting luxurious resort-like facilities, the Mathanguri rest houses offer a decent stay with nice, clean rooms and bathrooms and highly courteous staff, mostly government forest workers. The Upper and Lower Mathanguri bungalows each have about 6 rooms. Though the Upper has a better, more expansive view, due to its location atop a hillock, the Lower is also endowed with a lovely view. The Manas River is visible from the balcony of both the lodges. The Lower Mathanguri is relatively quite new, founded only a couple of years back while the Upper is 127 years old and has hosted tourists, conservationists, naturalists and many eminent personalities including three of India's Presidents. As mentioned previously, electricity lasts only between 6pm and 10pm in the evening and after that, kerosene lamps are the only light source for the rest of the night. Running water was present in the bathroom throughout our stay in the lodge.

4. Good food

The canteen at Upper Mathanguri

Living in the core of a tiger reserve, do not expect Chinese and continental dishes on the menu. Simple basic Indian staple food, rice and roti, vegetable and chicken curry, potato fry and lentil curry is what you can expect to be served at the canteen here. The food quality was good and though nothing fanciful, it was highly delectable and fulfilling. Since the lodge is located a great distance away from the nearest marketplace, you must inform the staff about your meal plans as early as possible to provide them sufficient time to arrange your meals. You might have to miss milk in your tea or wait till the end of the day to enjoy a boiled egg you had ordered in the morning. So, make sure you have your own storage of snacks to satisfy your hunger pangs after a long day in the forest.

5. Thrilling safaris and tour to Bhutan

Early morning and evening safaris from the Mathanguri tourist lodge allowed us to observe numerous species of wildlife including the Asian elephant, the Asian rhinoceros, the capped langur,
wild boar, wild Asian water buffalo, the Indian bison, herds of chitals and sambars. We also spotted a large number of birds like the jungle fowl, peacock, Bengal florican, pelicans, the elusive hornbill, flying eagle, red headed trogan, etc.

Bhutan is also easily accessible from Manas via a narrow mountain road near the Upper Mathanguri Lodge. A two hour long scenic journey along the road will take you to the Bhutanese village of PanBang. On the way, we had to show our Indian identity proofs to the Bhutan border officials to be allowed to cross the Indo-Bhutan border. However, our movements were only restricted to the Pan Bang village in the country.

Important Note: Due to the high demand of Upper and Lower Mathanguri among tourists and naturalists, you need to book at least four months ahead of your planned trip to Manas to get a booking in either of the lodges.

Also, normal forest opening dates are: November 15 to April 30. (Might open late or early due to rains)

normal forest opening date 15th nov and close on 30th april but due to rain may open late and early.

Cost of transport from Guwahati airport to Barpeta Road forest office: Rs. 3,500 one-way in AC Innova

Cost of forest guide and gypsy: Rs. 4,000 per day including morning and evening safari

Cost of guest house stay: Rs. 1,200 per day
